WEST KELOWNA, B.C. — Jennifer Hansen was evacuated from her home in the West Kelowna, B.C., area last week, but that hasn’t stopped the Westside Salvation Army captain from feeding firefighters and other evacuees.“It feels real good,” said Hansen, standing in front of a Salvation Army emergency disaster response vehicle parked at a West Kelowna community centre where hundreds of meals are being prepared.“I’ve said to many people, I can’t put the fire out, but as a team we can come around and feed you and support you.”Hansen said she and her family are “very fortunate.”They were evacuated as the wildfire ripped through the area, but their home and neighbourhood escaped damage, she said Friday evening.“For many, that is not going to be their reality,” she said. “They will not be going home for a significant amount of time. For me, it’s just an inconvenience.”Hansen said she’s seen the fire’...Boston shooting wounds at least 7 on the outskirts of Caribbean festival

BOSTON (AP) — Gunfire wounded at least seven people near a parade of Boston’s annual Caribbean festival on Saturday but was not related to the event, police said. Two suspects were arrested and multiple weapons were recovered in Dorchester, Police Commissioner Michael Cox told reporters. He said the victims were taken to local hospitals and their wounds were not life-threatening.The shootings happened on the outskirts of the J’ouvert Parade, Cox said, with officers halting the parade because of the large crime scene and to gather evidence. “This morning’s shooting is not related to the parade that occurred,” Cox said. Police believe the shooting might have erupted during an altercation between two groups shortly before 7:45 a.m., and are asking for the public’s help with tips or video.“As a result of officers responding very quickly to the scene they were able to run towards not only the gunfire but actually to apply tourniquets and help all the victims of the gunshots and also...‘All about emotions’ as some evacuees return home, West Kelowna fire chief says

The fire chief of West Kelowna, B.C., says it’s “all about emotions” as his community begins to process the devastation wrought by a fast-moving wildfire nine days ago.Jason Brolund says he and his crews are “gutted by the losses” of more than 180 homes in communities on the shores of Okanagan Lake. But he says they’re starting to breathe “a collective sigh, although very cautiously,” given the hot, sunny weather in the forecast for the province’s southern Interior.Brolund says community support has been like “fuel” for his crews, from children stopping by with encouraging signs to the meals being prepared for firefighters. He says about 900 people from West Kelowna were allowed to return home yesterday as evacuation orders in the Central Okanagan were rescinded.Orders are also being lifted for some in the District of Lake Country and on Westbank First Nation lands, though active firefighting continues in the region.The...Shooting at Oklahoma high school football game leaves 1 teen dead, police confirm

(NewsNation) – New reports shed light on nearly $1 billion in land purchases by a mysterious company near a California Air Force base that raised national security concerns.Since 2018, a group called "Flannery Associates" invested more than $800 million on almost 54,000 acres of agriculture-zoned land surrounding the Travis Air Force base in Solano County, California, public records show.Despite early speculation China was behind the purchases — amid concerns that companies with ties to China have been ramping up efforts to buy American farmland — legal representation for Flannery has maintained the group is controlled by U.S. citizens, with 97% of its capital coming from U.S.-based investors. However, after eight months of investigation, federal officials were not able to confirm or deny this to be true, and were not able to determine exactly who was backing the company. Now, reports from The New York Times and San Francisco Chronicle reveal Flannery is comprised of a group of ultra-...ATCEMS: Scooter rider in critical condition following a collision with a vehicle

SAN FRANCISCO — Another Giants top prospect will get to show off his stuff in front of the home crowd.Kyle Harrison will make his Oracle Park debut on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds, manager Gabe Kapler said on Saturday. It’ll be the Giants’ top pitching prospect’s second big league start coming off a tricky debut in hostile Philadelphia.Oddly, the 22-year-old left-handed pitcher gave up a majority of the five hits he allowed to the Phillies’ left-handed hitters — including a home run from former MVP Bryce Harper. He gave up two runs and struck out five in 3 1/3 innings primarily with a strong four-seam fastball up in the zone. With the off day Thursday, Harrison could have made his home debut on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball in the series finale against the Atlanta Braves. His dominance against Philadelphia’s right-handed hitters aside, the Giants saw it best to keep Harrison away from Atlanta’s lineup that holds a league-lead...Marseille struggles to beat Brest in French league

PARIS (AP) — Marseille moved level on points with Monaco at the top of the French league after laboring to a 2-0 home win against Brest on Saturday. The host started well and quickly broke the deadlock from a free kick that Chancel Mbemba headed home from close range at the far post. But that goal did not help Marseille play with confidence as it struggled to create attacking moves.Ismaila Sarr scored the second goal in the 65th minute. Brest travelled to Marseille with confidence after winning its opening two games for the first time in the club’s history.Led by an inspired Jeremy Le Douaron, Brest had the best chances of the first half without breaking the host’s solid defense at Stade Velodrome.Le Douaron came close to leveling just after the interval, only for his header to be saved on the goal-line by defender Jonathan Clauss.Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wasted a chance to double his team’s lead when alone near the penalty spot he missed the target.Marseille manag...Curacao defeats Taiwan 2-0 in Little League World Series semifinal

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Jay-Dlynn Wiel and Nasir El-Ossais got back-to-back singles off Taiwanese ace Fan Chen-Jun and later scored, leading Curacao to a 2-0 victory over Taiwan on Saturday in the semifinals of the Little League World Series.Taiwan came into the game having outscored its opponents 25-1 in its three previous outings at the tournament, but Curacao – which lost 9-1 to Taiwan on Wednesday – kept the Taiwanese bats quiet until the Caribbean team broke through.Fan came in for the bottom of the fourth to face Curacao’s top of the lineup. Fan hadn’t allowed a hit all tournament, but Jay-Dlynn hit a hard grounder into left field and Nasir followed with a single to right. After a steal from Jay-Dlynn, Curacao had runners at first and third when Joshua Acosta Fernandez laid down a bunt. The bunt had Fan, third baseman Liu You-An and catcher Chen Kai-Sheng confused on who was covering home and who was taking the ball. Liu took the ball and overthrew Chen, allowing Jay-Dly...US women DQ’d from 4×400 relay at worlds due to faulty baton exchange

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The American women’s 4×400 relay team was disqualified from the preliminary round at the world championships Saturday after their third and fourth runners in the four-lap race bungled the baton exchange.Quanera Hayes missed on several attempts to hand the stick to anchor runner Alexis Holmes. When they finally did make the exchange, they were out of the legal passing zone.It was the latest chapter in a long stretch of problems for Team USA in the relays, though a mishap in the longer relay is relatively rare because none of the runners are going as fast, and there isn’t as much traffic. With runners such as Allyson Felix, Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad leading the way in recent years, this has been as close to a sure thing as there is for the United States, which has won this race at seven of the last eight worlds. This year, they won’t even make the final. The U.S. men and women were due to race in the 4×100 relay later in t...Latest news
